Ready to pick in May at South Coast Field Station (Orange County, Ca.). Some are still hanging on the tree in December. A commercial Israeli variety started at UC Riverside. Very good taste, smooth and buttery with lots of flavor. Fruits are dark green with a well centered stem. Nice fruits often look shiny and unripe when they are ripe and ready to be picked. Most of the varieties grown in California fall into the “Guatemalan” or “Mexican” group (or a hybrid of the two) while Florida grows mostly “West Indian”. This is done by weight as a sample of the ripe fruit is taken. First the fruit is weighed, cut open and the seed removed.
