Avocados from Crete Bonita Chania, producer prices, Avocado. He hails from Santa Barbara, Ca. by Horace Pierce. Registered in 1939. Bargain seedling. The season begins in September Uncontrolled variety. Very good taste, smooth and buttery with a very creamy texture. Fruits are dark green with a well centered stem. Nice fruits often look shiny and unripe when they are ripe and ready to be picked. Most of the varieties grown in California fall into the “Guatemalan” or “Mexican” group (or a hybrid of the two) while Florida grows mostly “West Indian”. This is done by weight as a sample of the ripe fruit is taken. First, the fruit is weighed, cut open and the seed removed.
