Additional Information: Bred from Glendora, CA by CB Shoemaker. Introduced circa 1949. Bargain recycling discovered 1933. Season September to December. It was grown commercially in a small way in the interior of California during the 1940s and 1950s. The fruit tends to break fruiting records at the South Coast Research and Training Center in Irvine, California. Most of the varieties grown in California fall into the “Guatemalan” or “Mexican” group (or a hybrid of the two) while Florida grows mostly “West Indian”. This is done by weight as a sample of the ripe fruit is taken. First the fruit is weighed, cut open and the seed removed.
